I like Kyiv

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Ok, last week I went on a business trip to the capital of Ukraine. The notice was somewhat short (circa 29 hours), but hey, sometimes you gotta do what you’re supposed to.
I must say that I haven’t got the chance to see as much of the city as I would have liked, but from what I saw I got a rather mixed impression. Most of the housing and the streets are in pretty bad shape, and there are obviously aborted building projects that are now falling into decay. On the other hand the average people are more handsome than in Germany, especially the girls would make a longer stay very pleasant indeed. Taxi drivers in Kyiv seem to be a whole other species though and on my first ride I wasn’t sure I’d come to the hotel alive ;) The hotel was nice but tap water in Kyiv is to be avoided if possible. I still fight pimples from the rusty water and the overall dust that is in the air and that covers practically everything (although the latter may have been caused by a big construction site right next to the hotel).
I had a few hours on the day I arrived (Sunday, May 31) and a few on my last full day in Kyiv (the following Thursday) to get a glimpse of the town. Other than that I am well aquainted with the hotel and the office and the road between. Overtime is not any different from home…
The people I worked with are nice and the Sushi place and one pub I’ve been to are quite alright. So I would in fact love to come back, but with a notice less short.
